What Is Christian Science?

Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered and founded Christian Science, defined it as “the law of God, the law of good . . .” (Rudimental Divine Science). This deeper understanding of God as infinite Love and unchanging goodness leads to prayer that can heal, redeem, and restore anyone.

In 1866, a life-threatening injury compelled Mary Baker Eddy to turn wholeheartedly to God. She opened her Bible to an account of Jesus healing a man quickly and completely. A new sense of God, Spirit, as the only reality flooded her thought, and she was healed spontaneously. But she yearned to know how and why. For the next several years she continued to search and find in the Bible the underlying laws of God that would form the basis of her teaching and practice of Christian Science.

Since then, many have found that when they better understand their relationship to God through this Science of Christianity, their health is restored and character transformed. And each healing inspires a heartfelt desire to help others know and experience how loved we all are by God.

Origins of Christian Science

The Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, is the foundation for the theology and practice of Christian Science. In particular, Jesus’ ministry illustrates that healing and regeneration are experienced as we recognize our true nature as spiritual and made in the image and likeness of God. Examples of this can be seen in the biblical accounts of Abraham, Jacob, Moses, the prophets, Jesus, and his immediate disciples and followers.

Mary Baker Eddy’s lifelong spiritual search led to what she later characterized as a discovery. She saw that God’s laws are powerful spiritual mandates, always present and operating to heal, to redeem, and to bless humanity. To her, it was the practical Christianity that Jesus taught.

Of her developing practice of Christian healing, Mary Baker Eddy wrote that she was called to a patient whom a well-known attending physician had pronounced dying of pneumonia. “On seeing her immediately restored by me without material aid, he asked earnestly if I had a work describing my system of healing. . . . he urged me immediately to write a book which should explain to the world my curative system of metaphysics” (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany). At that time, she was already writing notes that would develop into her primary work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, which contains the full explanation of Christian Science and its practice of spiritual regeneration and healing.

Mary Baker Eddy founded the Christian Science Church in 1879. It includes The Mother Church in Boston, Massachusetts, and locally organized branch Churches of Christ, Scientist, worldwide, of which this church in Easton, Maryland is one.

The Tenets of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientists and its members

  1. As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life.
  2. We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God. We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God’s image and likeness.
  3. We acknowledge God’s forgiveness of sin in the destruction of sin and the spiritual understanding that casts out evil as unreal. But the belief in sin is punished so long as the belief lasts.
  4. We acknowledge Jesus’ atonement as the evidence of divine, efficacious Love, unfolding man’s unity with God through Christ Jesus the Way-shower; and we acknowledge that man is saved through Christ, through Truth, Life, and Love as demonstrated by the Galilean Prophet in healing the sick and overcoming sin and death.
  5. We acknowledge that the crucifixion of Jesus and his resurrection served to uplift faith to understand eternal Life, even the allness of Soul, Spirit, and the nothingness of matter.
  6. And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure.

More on Mary Baker Eddy’s Achievements

Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) was an influential American author, teacher, and religious leader noted for her groundbreaking ideas about spirituality and health, which she named Christian Science. She articulated those ideas in her major work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, first published in 1875. Four years later she founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, which today has branch churches and societies around the world. In 1908 she launched The Christian Science Monitor, a leading international newspaper and the recipient of seven Pulitzer Prizes. Visit the Mary Baker Eddy Library online here to learn more.

Healing On The Eastern Shore

The Christian Science Church, also known as The Church of Christ, Scientist, is a Christian denomination, with the Bible and especially Jesus’ teachings at the heart and soul of its practice.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy states: “Jesus established his church and maintained his mission on a spiritual foundation of Christ-healing.” This is the continuing mission of the Christian Science Church.

The practice of this system of Christian healing has resulted in significant cures of physical and mental problems for over a century, with many of these accounts available online. In Christian Science, God is seen as always upholding health and well-being. The power of prayer lies not in faith alone but in a deeper understanding of God’s divine laws that embrace humanity. Many have found that as God’s presence and love become more real and tangible, healing and regeneration occur naturally. By practicing Christian Science, many have lived free of drugs and other systems of physical care.

A Few Healings Local Members Have Experienced:

Healing As A Child

One of the very first healings in Christian Science I had was at the age of 11 or 12. My family was somewhat new to practicing Christian Science and I had been attending the Sunday School at the church only a couple of years. I had seen healings in my family (eye problems, effects from a fall, finding a place for us to live) but had never experienced a definitive healing myself. In Sunday School, the Bible lessons emphasized Jesus’ teachings through the parables of healing and I loved them. Yet, I remained unconvinced about whether healings were really “real”.

At one point, a large planter’s wart was developing on the sole of my foot. Basically, I just ignored it, thinking it would go away. It didn’t, but kept getting bigger and more painful to the point where I was walking with a decidedly noticeable limp and had about reached the limits of enduring the pain. So, the first thing I did about it was to whine to my mother who began to share with me some of the healing elements of Christian Science. I recall thinking, “I’m going to see if this Christian Science stuff works” and with that, I made the call (not my mother) to a Christian Science practitioner for help in applying the spiritual laws of God to the situation.

Finally, I was receptive to what the practitioner was telling me about one supreme God who created me in His image and likeness; that I was never separated from His care and a planter’s wart was not a creation of God, so it could not have any power over me. There were other thoughts that I do not recall that the practitioner shared with me. She gave me as assignment to read something from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and perhaps a hymn or two to ponder. I did these things and afterwards, simply fell asleep for an hour or so. When I awoke, the planter’s wart had changed character so much that where it had been hard and obdurate before, it was now much softer to the point where I easily removed the central part of it. After that was done, the pain was completely gone. The small hole on the bottom of my foot healed over in just a few days and my foot was completely normal. This experience was significant proof to me that Christian Science does heal effectively and permanently. There has been no return of other planter’s warts or situations like this on my body.

In thinking about this healing, I believe that my thought needed to be ready to accept my spiritual nature and be receptive to hearing, applying and understanding that God loved me enough to show me that healing is a natural result of learning more about my relationship to God. When I was no longer questioning and waiting to be convinced of these facts, healing occurred in a quick and effective way. Since that time I have relied on Christian Science and the laws of God, good in every experience of my life and have been so grateful for many healings.

Prayer And Keeping Faith

Foot Restored

Once I was trimming branches of an old tree with an electric saw, whose branches were overgrown, when a 10 foot long branch with a diameter of 7” at the cut end dropped straight down, cut-end first, onto my foot. At the time I wasn’t wearing anything on my feet but open foot sandals. Shortly after the initial sharp pain, I held firmly to the Truth of my being . . . the Truth that I was a child of a perfect, ever-present and ever-powerful God; where no accidents occur, where my purpose of gardening was holy ground and where I could not escape His protection. I simply refused to accept any other picture. God’s “everlasting arms of Love, are beneath, around, above.”

I continued my work trimming branches until the job was complete. Any pain, which lasted only a short while, simply melted away as I finished my trimming. After that, not only had the pain disappeared, but I had not a scratch or even a bruise on the foot affected. In fact, I walked two miles that evening with a friend as part of my weekly ritual. I am truly grateful for this instantaneous demonstration of God’s ever presence, protecting and guiding me each step of the way.

Is Anything Really Lost?

Recently, as I was getting dressed, I realized I could not find my wallet, which contained credit and debit cards, my license, cash and other cards of value. I retraced my steps and concluded it must have fallen out of an exercise bag I had it in as I got in my car after exercising the night before.

Thoughts of guilt, self-condemnation and burden had to be dealt with. But from the Bible came Jesus' instruction to come unto Him all that labor and are heavy laden. He also said, "My yoke is easy and my burden is light." And from a Sentinel article by Brian Talcott, "Let Love bear the burden." So the burden of personal responsibility was lifting.

With that addressed, the next thought was how could God possibly lose track of anything? I mean, it almost seemed ludicrous that our omnipotent, omnipresent Father could ever lose anything; and as His perfect idea, I couldn't either. This thought filled my consciousness.

I then asked for a practitioner for help which was immediately given.

There was a momentary thought about honesty, but it didn't require much attention, though I prayed briefly about it and established it as an integral part of God’s man.

I followed the human footsteps of retracing my steps and looking where it might have fallen about 12 hours before. I went to where my car had been parked and asked the shopping center maintenance crew if they had seen it. No one reported anything. My wife and I looked on my dresser and searched our home with no positive result.

All the while, I kept praying and continued to expect its return. After all, could anything be lost in God’s realm? Could I, as the Bible tells us in Genesis 1:26, created in His image and likeness, ever be deprived of His presence or His love? There was this overriding feeling that I could not.

The next morning, as I was getting dressed for work, I looked on the top of my dresser ready to reach for the wallet in its normal place, and there it was. I yelled out to my wife. She couldn't believe it as she had looked for it in that exact same spot the morning before and, of course, it hadn't been there.

Humanly, there is no explanation for its return. It was gone Wednesday morning and back on Thursday. But what changed was the declaration of the spiritual facts about the circumstances.

Our expectancy stayed positive because of the spiritual truths we claimed. Indeed, it is one of the clearest demonstrations of God’s presence in my life that I have ever witnessed.

Sunday School

The first lessons taught in our Christian Science Sunday School are stories and lessons contained in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. For example: first lessons would be the Ten Commandments, the Lord’s Prayer, and Christ Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Next lessons would be questions and answers pertaining to the weekly Christian Science Bible Lessons. These discussions center on how the Bible Lesson relates to each pupil’s daily life situations. Through this study, pupils become comfortable with many Bible stories and the life experiences of the Bible characters.

As well, students learn how to pray, how to listen to God, how to feel God’s love and ever-presence in their lives. Learning that God is all good, totally spiritual and entirely loving in nature, students also begin to learn to interpret the Bible’s spiritual messages using Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and to explore more deeply their relationship to God.
